Study of HLA antigens of the Martinican population

Abstract: This is the first time a study has been undertaken on the HLA profile of the Martinican population, a population which is essentially the product of intermixture between African‐Negroes and French Caucasians. Two hundred and thirty‐eight non‐related subjects were typed for the A and B loci, 158 subjects for C locus and 128 for DR locus. After analysis of our parameters (antigen and gene frequencies, linkage disequili‐bria, etc.) and their comparison to those found in the Black and Caucasian control populations… Show more

“…One may speculate that there exists a cross-reaction between streptococcal antigens and HLA antigens or that the B35 or DR1 antigen are linked with an Ir gene predisposing to abnormal anti-streptococcal response. Additionally, one should note that the Bw42 antigen and to a lesser degree the B14 antigen, found at decreased frequency in rheumatic fever are relatively specific of the Black population (Monplaisir et al 1985).…”

“…We have been able to collect blood from 88 patients with rheumatic fever in Martinique (a French island with 300,000 inhabitants) where the disease is still highly prevalent (Chalon et al 1986). We report here the results of a study of class I and class I1 HLA antigens in such patients, compared to a control population of identical origin, already studied by two of us (Monplaisir et al 1985).…”
