Study of freshly excised brain tissues using terahertz imaging

Abstract: We demonstrated that tumors in freshly excised whole brain tissue could be differentiated clearly from normal brain tissue using a reflection-type terahertz (THz) imaging system. THz binary images of brain tissues with tumors indicated that the tumor boundaries in the THz images corresponded well to those in visible images. Grey and white-matter regions were distinguishable owing to the different distribution of myelin in the brain tissue. THz images corresponded closely with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) r… Show more

“…The results in Fig. 6 show the significant absorption of water that will be present in fresh tissue and will play a role in THz image contrast, in agreement with [8,10,15]. Fresh bovine tissue of size ~3.5 cm × 3.5 cm × 2.5 cm is scanned to obtain peak time domain, magnitude, and phase THz images.…”

“…As a result, THz imaging has shown promise in assessment of burns [9], liver cirrhosis [10], and tissue damage from myocardial infarction [11]. Most notably, THz imaging has been applied to detecting and assessing regions of cancer in healthy tissue for a wide range of cancers including cancer of the skin [12,13], liver [11], colon [14], brain [15], and breast [16][17][18].…”

“…Second, the structural changes in afected tissues can also be an important sign for diagnosis and can be observed by THz imaging. As another example, a relection THz imaging system is used to identify tumors in freshly excised whole brain tissue from normal brain tissue based on structural observation [60]. Because the THz relection intensity is higher in brain tumors than in normal tissue, the diference in the THz relection intensity between the normal and tumor brain tissues can be adopted for the diagnosis of cancer.…”

“…Terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves are highly sensitive to biomolecules and water; they have been applied to many biomedical applications [7][8][9][10][11][12] including diagnosing various types of cancer [13][14][15][16][17]. The fundamental reason for the use of THz waves in cancer diagnosis is that they sensitively interact with water molecules.…”
