Study of Four Rainstorm Design Methods in Chongqing

Abstract: Based on minute-by-minute precipitation data from 1961 to 2016 obtained from the National Basic Weather Station of Shapingba, Chongqing, China, the Chicago rainstorm method, the Pilgrim & Cordery (P&C) method, the Common-frequency method and the natural rainstorm moving regularity (NRMR) method were used to design short-duration (1–3 h) and long-duration (24 h) rainstorm hyetographs. Then, a standardization method for test samples was designed to ensure that each test sample was standardized an… Show more

“…While the uniform hyetograph is constant across the temporal window within which it is defined, the Chicago model considers an initial period of growth of the rain intensity until a peak value is attained (at time t p [T]), which is then followed by a decrease of rain intensity. The peak time can be formulated as a fraction of the rain event duration, i.e., t p = rd, with 0 < r < 1 and usually ranging between 0.3 and 0.5 (e.g., Liao et al, 2021).…”

“…In China, the Chicago hyetograph method is widely employed in the planning and design of drainage systems and is recommended as a design rainfall method in the "Outdoor Drainage Design Standards" [28]. It has been extensively validated and is considered the most commonly used design rainfall method in China [29]. To explore the sensitive factors of waterlogging under various rainfall conditions, this study utilized the Chicago hyetograph method to provide rainfall input data.…”

“…Furthermore, considering that the intensity of rainfall is increasing due to climate change [10,11], waterlogging [12] and flooding [13] are becoming increasing threats. These phenomena can have negative socioeconomic impacts and, in some cases, even lead to the death of residents [14]. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a growing interest in managing water in the circular economy model.…”
