Study of fast neutron detector for COSINE-100 experiment

Abstract: A monitoring system for fast neutrons is planned in the COSINE experiment, a dark matter experiment with NaI crystals. We pursued several R&D approaches for a neutron detector using a liquid scintillator (LS). A pulse shape discrimination (PSD) technique is used for the identification of neutron events and the PSD properties of two different LS were compared. A good separation power between neutrons and γ has been achieved for energies between 200 keVee to 1500 keVee. The combination of alumina adsorption, fil… Show more

“…More data are obviously needed. It is important that COSINE-100 is planning to measure the neutron's intensity and neutron's modulation [73], in which case the COSINE-100 would know if the possible modulation is due to the neutrons 7 . It is obviously the key element of the proposal (1) based on the subdominant AQN-induced component of neutrons which, however, manifests itself by annual modulation.…”

“…If at least one crystal satisfies the trigger condition, data from all other crystals and the LAB-LS are recorded. The LAB-LS signals do not generate triggers, except in the case of energetic muon events that are coincident with one of the muon detector panels [37]. Energy scales for the high energy region in the NaI(Tl) crystals and LS are calibrated with the 1465 keV γ line and the 2614 keV γ line from 40 K and 208 Tl, respectively.…”

“…Two 5" hamamastsu photomultiplier tubes are coupled at both ends. We achieve PSD threshold between gamma and neutron events ∼ 0.3 MeVee with dynamic range upto ∼ 10 MeVee and having similar alpha background as obtained into the R&D set-up [2]. This detector is installed at COSINE-100 experiment room [3] and neutron flux measurement is ongoing.…”
