Study of Electrolyte Additives Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy on Symmetric Cells

Abstract: Wound LiCoO 2 /graphite cells with 1 M LiPF 6 EC:EMC electrolyte containing 1 wt%, 2 wt% vinylene carbonate (VC), 0.3 wt% trimethoxyboroxine (TMOBX) and 2 wt% VC + 0.3 wt% TMOBX were subjected to extended storage studies. After storage, the electrodes were studied using the symmetric cell and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) approach described by previous workers. This approach allows the impact of an additive on the impedance of the negative and the positive electrode to be distinguished. Compared… Show more

“…The importance of using symmetric cells for determining R ct of electrodes can be found in the literature. 13,14 After storage, the inflated pouch bags containing pouch cell electrodes were transferred to an Ar-filled glove box. The pouch cell electrodes were removed from the pouch bags.…”

“…R ct was taken to be the diameter of the mid-frequency semicircle in the Nyquist plot. 13,15,16 High voltage storage.-The effect of gas consumption on selfdischarge was tested in a high voltage storage experiment. In this experiment, only the voltage of the cells was monitored as a function of time.…”

“…12,26 Symmetric cells were constructed from electrodes after dissembling some of these pouch cells. The detailed procedures for symmetric cell construction have been described by Petibon et al 26 The pouch cells were charged or discharged to 3.8 V and held at 3.8 V for one hour (approx. 50% state of charge) before they were cut open in an argon-filled glove box.…”
