Objective: The duplication of optic canals is a rare anomaly found in both sexes, all ages, and various races. The present study was carried out to findthe incidence of duplication of optic canal and to study its clinical and developmental significance.Methods: The study included 100 dry human skulls of both the sexes and various age groups. These skulls were studied grossly and morphologicallyto find out duplication of the optic canals.Results: Additional optic canals were found in 3 skulls (3% cases). Out of them, 2 cases (2%) presented bilateral duplication, whereas in only onecase (1%), it was unilateral.Conclusion: Knowledge of additional optic canals is of paramount importance in performing surgical exploration of the optic canal during removal oftumors or decompression of optic canals or surgically accessing the cavernous sinus or sella turcica.Keywords: Optic canal, Duplication, Anatomy, Skull.

A duplication of optic canal was discovered on the right side of the skull during routine osteology class of Head and Neck in the Department of Anatomy at Sri Siddhartha Medical College (SSMC). The main canal was larger and situated as usual in the normal position, gives passage to the optic nerve whereas the accessory canal was smaller than the main canal and was positioned inferolateral to it, transmits the ophthalmic artery. The bony septum separating the two canals was approximately 3mm in length and 1mm in thickness. The duplicated optic canal is a rare anomaly of the optic canal which every radiologist, ophthalmologist, and neurosurgeon needs to be aware of. Imaging studies may aid in elucidating its true etiology corresponding with the age and time of onset of the duplicate optic canal.

Introduction: Duplication of optic canal is very rare anomaly which has been seen in both sexes, at various ages and in a number of races. Duplications may be unilateral or bilateral out of which the bilateral duplications is a very rare phenomenon. The present study was undertaken with the aim to determine the incidence of accessory optic canal in dry human skulls of Rajasthan State. The present Materials and Methods: study was conducted using 400 dried human skulls which were thoroughly examined for the presence of unilateral or bilateral accessory optic canals. It was found that out of 400 skulls studied, the incidences of Accessory Results: Optic Canal (AOC) were present in 14 (3.5%) skulls. The AOCs were present unilaterally on the right side in 6 (1.5%), unilaterally on the left side in 5 (1.25%) and bilaterally in 3 (0.75%) skulls. Conclusion: The clinical awareness of duplication of optic canal increases the success rate of surgical procedure of optic canal like decompression, tumour excision, approaching sella turcica, cavernous sinus approach, pneumatization procedures.
