Study of DDO 68: nearest candidate for a young galaxy?

Abstract: We present the results of optical spectroscopy and imaging with the SAO 6 m telescope for the dwarf galaxy DDO 68 (UGC 5340 = VV 542), falling into the region of very low density of luminous (L > L * ) galaxies (Lynx-Cancer void). Its deep images in V, R bands and in the narrow Hα-filter show that this galaxy has the very irregular morphology, with a long curved tail on the South and a ring-like structure at the Northern edge. The latter consists of 5 separate regions, in three of which we could measure O/H by… Show more

“…Summarising, we conclude that previous (e.g., van Zee et al (1998), Pustilnik et al (2001b), Pustilnik et al (2005) for I Zw 18, SBS 0335-052 E,W and DDO 68) and new (Ekta et al, in prep. for UGC 772 and SDSS J2134-0035) observational data indicate that starbursts in all the lowest metallicity (O/H < 7.30) XMD BCGs, which are "massive" objects with M(gas) of (2.6-12)×10 8 M ⊙ , are related to mergers and strong interactions.…”

“…(The closest SDSS source, SDSSJ095646.04+284943.7, is only part of this larger galaxy). It has been classified as a very metal-deficient Im/BCD by Pustilnik, Kniazev & Pramskij (2005) and included in the Pustilnik et al (2011) list of extremely low surface brightness galaxies. It again has very blue g − r 0.…”

“…The gas phase metallicity and photometrical properties of the void galaxy population have been presented in ;Perepelitsyna, Pustilnik, Kniazev (2014). Detailed studies of some peculiar galaxies located in this region can be found in Chengalur et al (2006); Pustilnik et al (2005; Chengalur & Pustilnik (2013). The galaxies studied in the last cited works are unusual in that they have a very large M (Hi)/LB ratio, unusually blue colours, and/or very low metallicity.…”
