Study of Atrioventricular Conduction in Man Using Electrode Catheter Recordings of His Bundle Activity

Abstract: The technique of recording electrograms of the His bundle, using a tripolar electrode catheter positioned across the tricuspid valve, was applied in a physiological study of atrioventricular conduction in man. Increasing the heart rate to 160 beats/min by right atrial pacing produced progressive prolongation of the P-H interval while the H-Q interval remained constant. At any given paced heart rate, digitalis caused a prolongation of the P-H interval. Isoproterenol and atropine markedly shortened the P-H inter… Show more

“…Progressive A-V nodal delay with normal His-Purkinje conduction has also been noted when the heart rate of human subjects was increased by single atrial pacing. 13 Similarly under these conditions, the localization of A-V conduction delay to the N-H interval has been reported. "…”

“…The control sinus cycle length (CL) and AV nodal (AH) and infranodal (HQ) conduction times were measured. 16 The mean disopyramide level at the conclusion of repeat electrophysiologic testing was 2.9 + 0.9 ug/ ml. Because the therapeutic range for disopyramide is considered to be 2.0-4.0 ,ug/ml, only two patients (nos.…”

“…It is used experimentally to facilitate the induction of tachyarrhythmias during electrophysiologic studies because sympathetic stimulation increases sinus rate, shortens atrioventricular intranodal conduction time, decreases excitability threshold, and shortens the plateau of diastolic depolarization of specialized cells, thus favoring the appearance of tachyarrhythmias (Damato et al, 1969;Hoffman and Ccinefield, 1964).…”
