Study by Scanning Electron Microscopy of the Morphogenesis of Three Types of Lingual Papilla in the Mouse

Abstract: Tongues were removed from fetuses of mice on the 15th day of gestation (E15), from newborns (PO), from juveniles on the 7th day (P7) and on the 14th day (P14) after birth for examination by scanning electron microscopy. In the fetuses at E15, rudiments of fungiform papillae with a relatively regular, lattice-like pattern were visible on the anterior half of the dorsal surface of the tongue. The outline of the rudiment of a circumvallate papilla could be recognized on the median line between the lingual body an… Show more

“…The development and micro-anatomy of lingual (i.e. tongue) papillae have been extensively studied, but their large-scale spatial organization has received little attention (Hume and Potten, 1976;Iwasaki et al, 1996). Both Fz3 and Fz6 are expressed in the tongue epithelium at E13.5, as judged by expression of the corresponding lacZ knock-in alleles (Fig.…”

“…The most interesting features of the histological structures of reptilian tongues reflect adaptations to a dry habitat or to seawater, but stratification and keratinisation of the lingual epithelium are common features [19,20]. The alligator is an aquatic reptile and its lingual epithelium is strongly keratinised [19,45].…”

“…In the rats, vallate papilla has oval shape and is 1 mm in length and 0.5 mm in width (14). Vallate papilla takes its normal shape in mouse on the 13 th day (15,16) 13-13.5 th day (17) or 15 th day (18,21), in rats on the 16 th day (18) in prenatal days.…”
