“…The uterine blood flow, including the maternal placental blood flow during pregnancy, is influenced not only by alterations in the uterine vasculature, but also by the contractile activity of the surrounding myometrium. Thus, visceral and vascular uterine smooth muscles are closely related structures, and form direct connections through myometrial fibers attached to the arterial tunica media (100). A decrease in uterine blood flow correlating to both intensity and frequency of uterine contractions has been found in animal models (73), and has also been demonstrated by angiography during human labour (18).…”

“…This feature was not seen in the uteroplacental arteries in normal pregnancies. There is general agreement on the anatomy of the blood to the human non-pregnant uterus (Dakaard 1946;Lundgren 1957 arcuate arteries derive from the uterine arteries and run in the outer third of the myometrium, giving off two sets of vessels, the centrifugal ones which nourish the outer one-third of the myometrium and the centripetal ones which branch in a fan-like manner towards the endometrium. These centripetally directed arteries are the radial arteries and they give 'off basal branches that supply only the basal endometrium and then break up into terminal spiral arteries.…”

“…The maternal placental vascular resistance is mainly determined by the diameter of the myometrial vessels, which is affected not only by the tone of the smooth muscle of the vascular wall, but also by the surrounding myometrial smooth muscle tissues. These influence the Correspondence : S.
