In this study, we present a three-dimensional numerical model for the interaction of flow with submerged flexible vegetation, based on a large-eddy simulation and the immersed boundary method. The model innovatively realises the interaction between the flow and highly flexible vegetation with clustered leaves. Besides being a three-dimensional model of motion with full degrees of freedom, this study improves the consideration of the motion of the vegetation in all directions, and in addition the energy and momentum transfer in the spanwise direction. Furthermore, we perform a flume experiment for the flow with submerged flexible vegetation, the results of which are used to validate the simulation effects of the numerical model. It is found that the numerical model can effectively simulate the velocity profiles and the movement of vegetation induced by the flow. Using the model to analyse the flow–vegetation interaction, we find that the movement of vegetation is closely related to the flow velocity. As the flow velocity increases, both the offset angle and the vegetation swaying amplitude increase. Compared to vertical rigid vegetation, the tilting of flexible vegetation does not significantly change the velocity difference and the magnitude of the turbulent kinetic energy between the inside and the outside of the vegetation canopy, but it does weaken the disturbance to flow, thus reducing the resistance to flow. However, the swaying of vegetation dose significantly increase the velocity difference between the inside and the outside of the canopy. It forms Kelvin–Helmholtz hairpin vortices intensifying the turbulence production, and enhancing the disturbance and resistance to flow.

Metals can accumulate in agricultural soils, presenting a serious threat to human health; therefore, it is important to analyze the quality of these soils to avoid possible harm related to their contamination in the future. Despite the importance of monitoring arable soil quality, few studies have examined the current state of Cu and Cd soil contamination through analysis of historical data and temporal trends in heavy metal content. Therefore, this study was aimed at analyzing the spatial variability of Cu and Cd content (expressed by toxicity indices) and assessing the level of contamination of arable soils in Poland over the last 25 years (1995–2020). The average Cu content in soil throughout the duration of the study was ~10 mg/kg. The average Cd content increased from 0.7 mg/kg (in 1995) to 3.4 mg/kg (in 2020). The evaluation of Cu and Cd soil contamination showed that soils contaminated with Cd and Cu constituted 1.4% and 2.3% of the total monitoring points, respectively. The geoaccumulation index and pollution index ranged for Cu from −5.23 to 3.09 (mean: −2.50) and from 0.02 to 6.40 (mean: 0.20), and for Cd from −5.23 to 6.92 (mean: −1.67) and from 0.01 to 60.58 (mean: 0.44). The soil was practically uncontaminated with Cu and Cd in 98.77%/98.92% and 93.44%/97.92% of cases, respectively. On a national scale, the contents of Cu and Cd in soils depend on soil properties (pH, C, OM, ST, and CM) to a very small extent. An assessment of the spatial distribution of Cu and Cd concentrations in Polish arable soils indicated regional differences related to the degree of industrialization/urbanization. The obtained results show the impact of human activity on the level of heavy metals present in soils.

The paper presents the results of numerical analyses carried out in the IRIC environment on the Nays2DH hydrodynamic model regarding the impact of plants in the riverbed and watercourse maintenance on hydraulic conditions. The research material was collected for the actual input variant in October 2018 on the Ślęza River in Wrocław. The constructed and calibrated model was reconfigured on basis of the existing vegetation in three possible variants related to river maintenance: W0 variant - leaving the vegetation in the riverbed, W1 variant - removing all vegetation in the riverbed, variant W2 - removing vegetation in the 2.0 m strip from the right bank, W3 - removing of vegetation in a strip of 2.0 m from the bank, alternately on the right and left bank. Hydrological boundary conditions were flows from 0,32 to 5 [m3/s]. For four variants, the dependence of flows on the water table location, maximum and average velocities in the channel, and maximum and average shear stresses in the channel were analysed.
