Studies on the Standardization of Mistletoe Preparations

Abstract: The newly isolated phenylpropanoids syringin, syringenin-apiosylglucoside, eleutheroside E and the high molecular lectins and viscotoxins were selected for a standardization of mistletoe extracts and drug preparation. The phenylpropanoids found in all alcoholic and aqueous extracts were suitable for an HPLC fingerprint analysis, and for quantitative determination. The lectin content of the drug preparations was determined by single radial immunodiffusion. As shown by the isoelectric focussing method, Iscador® … Show more

“…Several types of tumor-reducing component have been isolated from different mistletoe extracts [13], such as lectins 114], viscotoxins [ 15], protein complex 116], alka loids 117], polysaccharides [ 181 and polyphenolic sub stances [2]. One of these tumor-reducing components was isolated from the mistletoe extract Iscador and identified as a peptide with an approximate molecular weight of 5,000 D. This pepetide was very cytotoxic to lymphoma cells but not to normal lymphocytes [ 13], It also reduced the size of growing tumor in mice [13], The method of isolating the peptide removed large-molecular-weight proteins (lectins) as well as small-molecular-weight amino acids and detectable sugars.…”

“…Viscum album (mistletoe) plant extracts have been used in the treatment of various diseases such as epilepsy, infer tility, hypertension, debility and connective-tissue disor ders [ 1,2], Over the last 50 years there has been increasing interest in the use of different extracts of mistletoe plants to tumorous patients [3.4). Various data point to a cytotoxic action of these extracts against different tumor cell lines (5 ].…”

“…Viskotoksin miktarı ve konakçıları belli Iscador preparatlarının stan dart olarak kullanıldığı ince tabaka kromatografisiyle yapılan inceleme lerde, V. album alt türlerinin içerdiği viskotoksinlerden sadece A3 ve B'nin varlığı tespit edilebilmiştir (17,18) Karşılaştırmalı kromatografik çalışmalar badem ve özellikle zerdali ağaçlan üzerinden toplanan V. album ssp. album örneklerinin viskotoksin, fenilpropanoit ve lignan türevi maddeler yönünden zengin olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.…”
