“…The absorption of endotoxins from the intestinal tract of mammals, both under physiological and pathological conditions, is a long-standing, but still current, problem. The majority of researchers could not demonstrate endotoxin absorption from the intestinal canal (2,3,7,10,13,17,24,31). However, as found by Rauss and co-workers (18-20), Ketyi (11), and Ocklitz and co-workers (15, 16), the perorally administered endotoxin, as an antigen, is able to produce a specific immunity.…”

“…Thus, the main problem in the elucidation of the pathogenesis of these enterotoxemias is the absorption of endotoxin from the intestines. Earlier studies on endotoxin absorption gave contradictory results (2,7,9,10,13,14,17,21,22,24,25,30,31).…”

“…For example, antibiotics have not always protected normal dogs in which shock has been induced (9), and in rats raised in bacteria-free situations, contrary to what might be expected shock occurred with the same traits as in rats taken from a common pen, and which were consequently, carriers o f intestinal bacterial flora (35,36).…”

“…Nevertheless, there are other publications which deny the toxic bacterial factor as a cause o f irreversibility o f shock (9,35,36).…”

“…In spite of such reports, studies by Hardy et al and Lillehei showed no beneficial effects on the outcome of hemorrhagic shock resulting from pretreatment with antibiotics [8,12] [1967] demonstrated that blood and plasma from irreversibly shocked dogs were not lethal for mice rendered tenfold sensitive to E. coli endotoxin [23], Because of the known detoxifying properties of the liver, it was con sidered that under conditions of severe shock, toxins, whatever their source may be, concentrated within this organ. One might thus expect ex tracts of shocked hypoxic liver to be toxic and possibly to increase the susceptibility of shocked animals to irreversibility.…”
