Studies on the Pathogenicity of Yersinia enterocolitica

Abstract: Comparative studies on pathogenicity between Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis were performed using experimental infection systems in vivo and in vitro. All of thestra ins of both species successfully produced experimental enterocolitis in rabbits although the severity varied with the strains challenged. The changes were characterized by granulomatous lesions with necrobiotic centers in reticuloendothelial tissues of the intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver and spleen. These strains unif… Show more

“…The mechanisms by which the organism mediates these symptoms are poorly understood. However, the preferential avidity for lymphoid tissues seen in this bacterium and the characteristic histopathological finding of lymphoid hyperplasia mainly seen in mesenteric lymph nodes (9,10) suggest that the stimulation of a large proportion of T cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of this infection.…”

“…Foram feitos alguns relatos sobre o período de eliminação de Y. enterocolitica em animais infectados experimentalmente com cepas de diferentes sorotipos, inoculados em diferentes espécies de animais por diferentes vias 2,5,8,9,11 , não existindo entretanto, dados a respeito, com amostras de yersinias atípicas.…”

“…The latter has been well documented in Y. enterocolitica (Quan et al 1974, Carter & Collins 1974, Alonso et al 1975, 1978, Une 1977, Falcão et al 1984, Apfel & Noleto 1991, Bauab & Falcão 1991, Heesemann et al 1993. However in Y. pseudotuberculosis, only a few studies have shown in vivo infection, and the kinetics has not been studied.…”
