“…This registry, which is known as the Ozyorsk Offspring Cohort [referred to as the Mayak Children’s Cohort (18)], includes offspring of Mayak workers and other children meeting the above mentioned age and residential history criteria. For both the Ozyorsk Offspring Cohort and Mayak Worker Cohort, vital status follow-up and cause of death are actively ascertained using address bureau records and vital statistics data (including death certificates and autopsy reports) (18). …”

“…No evidence of a decrease in birth rate or fertility in the exposed population nor increased incidence of spontaneous abortions or stillbirths has been observed (Kossenko et al, 1994). There has been one study (Koshurnikova et al, 2002) of persons living in the town of Ozyorsk exposed to fallout from the nearby nuclear facility. This study reported an excess of thyroid cancer 3-4 times than expected relative to rates for the whole of Russia and a somewhat lower excess (1.5-to 2-fold higher) based on a comparison with Chelyabinsk Oblast rates; however, no estimates of radiation dose were included in this study.…”

The establishment of these cohorts was based on (a) the exposure due to the employment in the Mayak Production Association (MPA), i.e.…”

“…Mayak workers cohort [1], (b) the exposure of the regional Ozyorsk population due to atmospheric releases of radionuclides from MPA, i.e. Ozyorsk population cohort [2], (c) the exposure due to accidental releases from the Mayak facility into the river Techa, resulting in exposed populations, i.e. Techa river cohort [3,4], and (d) the exposure to the fallout from nuclear tests that were conducted at the Semipalatinsk test site affecting Semipalatinsk and the Altai region [5,6].…”
