Studies on the Mechanism of Hydrogen Transport in Animal Tissues

Abstract: In 1938, Hopkins and coworkers (1, 2) showed that succinic dehydrogenase could be inactivated by oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and could be reactivated by reduced glutathione (GSH). They interpreted these results to mean that the active enzyme requires i n t a c t --S H groups and that when these are converted to the --S --S --form of the enzyme, the dehydrogenase is inactivated. Any assumption that the functioning of the enzyme involved an oscillation between the SH and the --S---S---form of the enzyme seemed t… Show more

“…Malonate, as a competitive inhibitor of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), 44,45 decreases significantly in the kidney of EGFP mice ( Figure 2C and Table 1), which suggests high activity of succinate dehydrogenase, an enzyme catalyzing the reaction from succinate to fumarate. High activity of succinate dehydrogenase is consistent with the increased levels of fumarate in the kidney of EGFP mice.…”

“…It is known (4,8) that aluminum can promote the reduction of cytochrome c in a succinic dehydrogenase-cytochrome c system. The marked inhibition of aluminum-induced phosphate uptake by cyanide, suggests that aluminum stimulates phosphate uptake at the cytochrome site.…”

“…Potter and co-workers reported t h a t succinate oxidation by chicken kidney homogenates was inhibited about 35y0 in the presence of 0.0033 i W arsenite (10) and that the oxidation by r a t liver homogenates was inhibited about 30% by 0.001 M arsenite (9). On the other hand, Green (4) has stated that 0.033 ilJ arsenite permits oxidation of succinate in cyclophorase preparations.…”
