Studies on the in Vitro Antitumor Activity of Fatty Acids: Iv. The Esters of Acids Closely Related to 10-Hydroxy- 2-Decenoic Acid From Royal Jelly Against Transplantable Mouse Leukemia

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that whole royal jelly, a fraction from royal jelly (10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid), and certain closely related dicarboxylic acids, some of which are also found in royal jelly, will inhibit the development of transplantable AKR leukemia when the pH is below 5.6.The ester of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid from royal jelly was found to be just as effective against AKR leukemic cells as the acid itself, with the added advantage that it could be used at neutrality.Through the testing of a ser… Show more

“…10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid has been isolated as a royal jelly component possessing anti-tumor activity in vitro, [12][13][14] but 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid was ineffective at inhibiting BPA-induced proliferation of MCF-7 cells (data not shown). Identification of the active substance in royal jelly is now in progress.…”

“…A certain number of derivatives of the title compounds (E)-non-2-enoic acid (C9) and (E)-dec-2-enoic acid (C10) exhibit interesting properties, e.g., 10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid isolated from royal jelly shows good antibiotic activity against many bacteria and fungi [6,7]. 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenoic acid as a derivate of C9 acts as a receptor ligand in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus and elevated concentrations can be found in patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease [8].…”

“…RJ consists of proteins, sugars, lipids, vitamins, and free amino acids (2,25), and includes various other components such as the unsaturated fatty acid 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decenoic acid (HDEA) (20). HDEA has been reported to have many pharmacological activities such as anti-tumor activity (27), collagen production-promoting activity (15), and anti-biotic activity (1), but its biological activities on CNS have remained unknown. Therefore, in the present study we examined if HDEA could regulate cell lineages of NSCs, be-Immunocytochemical procedures.…”
