“…The staphylococci were the Smith strain of coagulase-positive Staph. aureus (originally obtained by Dubos from a patient with osteomyelitis), maintained by in uitro passage in the laboratory (Smith & Dubos, 1956a, Smith, 1956. Other strains obtained from infected patients in the University of Iowa Hospitals have been used occasionally and they produce similar effects to those of the Smith strain.…”
