Studies on the Etiology of Lymphomas in Turkeys: Isolation of Reticuloendotheliosis Virus

Abstract: Studies of tissues from 25 normal turkey flocks and of 15 selected turkey lymphoid tumors revealed no Marek's disease or lymphoid leukosis viruses, although reticuloendotheliosis viruses (REV) were isolated from 3 flocks (2 with a history of neoplastic disease). The REV isolates were culturally and antigenically similar to the prototype REV strain T but were of low pathogenicity. Attempts failed to transmit 6 lymphoid tumors of diverse origin by inoculation into 2 strains of recipient turkeys. These data suppo… Show more

“…The post‐mortem examination of some culled birds did not reveal any lesions that might raise the suspicion of the presence of REV. The finding of sporadic infection in turkey flocks supports earlier reports (Sarma et al., 1975; Solomon et al., 1976; McDougall et al., 1978; Witter et al., 1982) and indicates that REV is circulating in turkey flocks in Germany. The source of the REV exposure in the seropositive flocks is unknown.…”

“…More recently Paul et al (1976) isolated REV from two outbreaks of turkey leukosis and reproduced the disease in turkeys by inoculation of cell free filtrates. Solomon et al (1976) also isolated REV from three turkey flocks, two of which had a history of mortality from neoplastic disease. During 1975 leukosis occurred in a turkey breeding organisation in England.…”

“…Reticuloendotheliosis viruses are known to infect a number of avian species including chicken, duck, quail, pheasant and turkey. Natural reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) infection and disease have been recognized in turkey¯ocks in Israel (Ianconescu et al, 1979), the United Kingdom (McDougall et al, 1978) and the United State of America (Sarma et al, 1975;Solomon et al, 1976;Witter and Glass, 1984). In some turkey¯ocks REV is endemic (Witter, 1997).…”
