Studies on the Dynamics of Bilaterally Coupled X-Band Gunn Oscillators

Abstract: Abstract-The dynamics of a system comprising of two bilaterally coupled Gunn oscillators (BCGOs) has been examined using a circuit theoretic model of the Gunn oscillator (GO). The effects of coupling factors (k ij ) between i-th and j-th oscillators on the frequency-range of synchronized operation and the magnitude of common frequency of oscillation have been examined semi-analytically and by numerical solution of the system equations. The occurrence of chaotic oscillations at the verge of synchronization band… Show more

“…In numerical simulation, we take value of the parameter c negative (−0.002) to have below threshold operation (as noted in 2.1) and values of other parameters (a, b, d) are chosen from the knowledge of the dynamics of a GO reported in [22][23][24]. Note that a and b determine the oscillating frequency and d bounds the growth of sustained oscillation amplitude [22]. Among these parameters, c is most sensitive to bias voltage variation.…”

“…This technique of chaos generation is similar to parameter tuning technique of a forced non-oscillatory Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator [18,19]. The onset of chaotic oscillations in different microwave oscillators has also been reported in the literature [20][21][22][23][24]. Further, in the condition of unilateral and bi-lateral coupling, two chaotic oscillators become synchronized.…”

“…The differential equation describing the dynamics of the system is derived from the model depicted in Figure 1 applying the Kirchhoff's mesh law. The obtained equation is written as follows after some logical substitution and normalization [19]:…”

“…As β 1 and β 3 are related to the device resistance so they demand more attention in the analysis of onset of oscillation. Also the relative magnitude of β 3 is much less compared to β 1 , hence the parameter d can be taken smaller than c. The effect of variation of the applied dc bias would be studied by considering the variation of c. Note that the increase in the value of V B results in the decrease in the value of c [19].…”

“…[11][12][13]. Recently, the dynamics of a system of bilaterally coupled periodic Gunn oscillators (BCPGO) has been studied [14]. There it has been shown that, depending on the magnitude of the coupling factors (CF) between two oscillators, the system could operate in a synchronized state, a quasi periodic state or a chaotic state.…”
