Studies on the Development and Chemotherapy of Larvae of Parascaris equorum (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) in Experimentally and Naturally Infected Foals

Abstract: Experimentally induced infections of Parascaris equorum in worm-free pony foals required 14 to 17 days for migration of the larvae through the liver and lungs, and 79 to 110 days to become gametogenically functional. Treatment of experimentally infected or naturally exposed foals during the parenteral phase of development, using levamisole at 8 mg/kg, a mixture of levamisole at 8 mg/kg plus piperazine at 88 mg base equivalent/kg, or dl-tetramisole at 10 mg/kg, was quite efficacious in (1) reducing the number o… Show more

“…Fecal samples were collected on the day of treatment and at 7 (most >7) to 14 days after treatment. Search for ascarid and strongyle eggs in feces of foals was by a qualitative method (presence or absence) or a quantitative method (eggs per gram of feces-EPGs; Lyons et al 1976Lyons et al , 1988. A qualitative examination for parasite eggs was made on all fecal samples except those from foals on Farm KY in which a quantitative method was used.…”

“…Sheather's solution was used mainly because it has a specific gravity high enough for excellent flotation of Eimeria leuckarti oocysts. The qualitative technique was used because it is much more sensitive for detecting oocysts and nematode eggs, especially when present in low numbers, than is the quantitative modified Stoll technique (with a factor of 10), which the authors (Lyons et al 1976) used for determining worm eggs per gram of feces (EPGs). This qualitative method, which concentrates oocysts and nematode eggs, is important for assessing not only the effect of parasiticides but also the prevalence of parasites.…”

“…Regular manure removal from the pastures and systematic rotation of horses in paddocks and pens is recommended (Lyons et al 1976). Yearly coprological examination is recommended to assess the efficacy of the management procedures (Kaplan 2002).…”
