Pakistan is inadequate in vegetable oil, and an enormous amount is spent on its import. This is due to the lack of local varieties of oilseed crops in the country. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is used as a supreme oilseed crop due to its higher oil content. Its hybrids are popular due to its cross-pollinated mode. The present study was conducted for the evaluation of crosses that were better in oil and yield-related traits. For this purpose, 8 parental genotypes were collected, including 5 female and 3 male parents. The subsequent Line × Tester breeding scheme crossed these parental genotypes. Fifteen crosses and eight parental lines were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design by using three repetitions. At maturity, data was collected for the following traits such as head diameter, time to bud formation, time to flower initiation, time to maturity, leaf area, plant height, no. of leaves per plant, no. of ray florets per head, 1000 achene weight, achene yield per plant, protein contents and oil contents. Crosses having better yield were selected. Among parents, lines 3-A, 11-A, and 23-A, while testers 79-R and 20-R were the best general combiners for head diameter, time to bud formation, time to flower initiation, time to maturity, leaf area, plant height, number of leaves/plants, 1000 achene weight, achene yield/plant and oil contents. SCA effects showed that cross combination of 12-A × 20-R, 11-A × 78-R, and 20-A × 79-R was best for time to bud formation, the number of leaves per plant, 1000 achene weight, plant height, time to flower initiation and oil contents, respectively. The information obtained from the hybrids can be used in further breeding programs.

A study was carried out to assess the combining ability of ten CMS lines with four testers using the line x tester method. Biometrical observations were taken for days to 50% flowering, plant height, head diameter, days to maturity, volume weight, hundred seed weight, seed yield /plant, oil content and oil yield/plant. Specific combing ability variance was greater than the general combining ability variance for all the characters which indicated that non-additive gene action played a major role in inheritance. The gca of parents were not in agreement with the per se performance for various traits. Hence, the selection of parents should be based on gca alone for a breeding programme. Three lines viz., COSF 12A, COSF 13A and CMS 207A, and tester IR 6 were identified as good general combiners for seed and oil yield. Among the hybrids generated using good general combiners, COSF 13A x IR 6 had the additive type of gene action for seed and oil yield per plant. In general, most of the crosses had non-significant sca for oil yield per plant and oil content which indicated the presence of an additive type of gene action. Hence, the selection of good general combiners for oil content, seed and oil yield will help to evolve high oil yielding hybrids in sunflowers.

The experiment involved 7 different cms analogues as a female parent and 6 restores lines as male parent to synthesis of a set of these 42 hybrids. The experiment was conducted during spring season 2012 in Line×Tester breeding design and evaluated for combining ability of 7 morphological, physiological and important sunflower yield components traits. The results based on GCA effects of parents for different characters revealed that among the lines DV-10A and among testers P93R, P143R and RHA83R6 were found to be the good general combiners for seed yield and oil content with early maturing except P143R, which is good combiner for flowering and late maturity. The crosses CMS-XA×RHA83R6 and PRUN-29A×RHA83R6 were found to be superior and exhibited highest SCA effects with highest mean values for oil content but for seed yield having negative SCA effects with average for seed yield. The hybrids PKU-2A×RHA83R6 and E002-91A×P93R having high mean seed yield with high SCA effects.
