Background: Ethnic differences in the timing of human tooth development are unclear. Aim: To describe similarities and differences in the timing of tooth formation in two groups of Sudanese children and young adults. Subjects and methods: The sample consisted of healthy individuals from Khartoum, Sudan, aged 2-23 years. The Northern group was of Arab origin (848 males, 802 females) and the Western group was of African origin (846 males, 402 females). Each mandibular left permanent tooth from first incisor to third molar was assessed from dental radiographs into one of 15 development stages. Mean ages at entry for 306 tooth stages were calculated using probit regression in males/females in each group and compared using a t-test. Results: Mean ages were not significantly different in most tooth stage comparisons between ethnic groups for both males (61/75) and females (56/76), despite a tendency of earlier mean ages in the Western group. Mean ages for most tooth stage comparisons between males and females (137/155) were not significantly different within ethnic groups suggesting low sexual dimorphism. Conclusion: The mean ages of most mandibular tooth formation stages were generally not significantly different between ethnic groups or between males and females in this study.

Objective: To evaluate the agreement and applicability of the Chronological Dental Mineralization Table of Nicodemo, Moraes and Medici Filho (1974) to estimate age held by undergraduate Dentistry students at the Federal University of Paraíba. Material and Methods: Field research applied with a sample of 50 students according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sequentially, 3 panoramic radiographs were exposed (actual age known only by teachers), and students were instructed to interpret them from the selection of 2-4 teeth under formation. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences), version 20.0, adopting significance level of 5%. Results: Most students chose 3 teeth, with percentages of 56.0% (n = 28); 38.0% (n = 19) and 58.0% (n = 29) for radiographs 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Teeth selected with greater frequency were: 47 (20.1%, n = 33) and 45 (19.5%, n = 32) -radiography 1; 38 (22.7%, n = 32) and 18 (13.4%, n = 19) -radiography 2; and 47 (17.9%; n = 26) and 36 (13.7%; n = 20) -radiography 3. The agreement between estimated and actual ages was 60.0% for radiography 1, 12.0% for radiography 2 and 32.0% for radiography 3. Age was underestimated in 40.0% (n = 20) and 88.0% (n = 44) in radiographs 1 and 2, respectively. Overestimation of the actual age occurred only in radiography 3 (68.0%; n = 34). The linear regression analysis revealed that it is possible to estimate the actual age from the maximum age stipulated by training students with 88.1% success rate. Conclusion: The method is applicable; however, the correlation between estimated and actual ages varied considerably among radiographs, and maximum estimated values were closer to the actual age than minimum values.

Relationship between chronological age and mineralization of the lower third molar according to Demirjian stages RESUMEN Objetivos: Relacionar la edad cronológica y la mineralización del tercer molar inferior según los estadios de Demirjian en radiografías panorámicas digitales. Material y Métodos: Se realizó un análisis retrospectivo evaluando 1176 radiografías panorámicas digitales del Servicio de Radiología de la Clínica Dental de la Facultad de Estomatología, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, entre los años 2011 y 2012. Los casos tenían entre 7 -23 años de edad. Resultados: En la pieza 38, el estadio D presentó una edad promedio de 14,05 ± 1,35 años para el sexo femenino y 13,42 ± 1,30 años para el sexo masculino. El tercer molar inferior en el sexo masculino presentó una maduración ligeramente anterior que el sexo femenino, esta diferencia fue estadísticamente signifi cativa en los estadios D, E, F, G y H. No se encontró diferencia entre los estadios de Demirjian de la pieza 38 y 48. En el estadio H el 100% del sexo femenino y el 99,1% del sexo masculino tuvieron 18 o más años. Conclusiones: Los resultados sugieren que el método de Demirjian, para evaluar la mineralización del tercer molar, puede ser una herramienta útil en el estudio de la edad cronológica.PALABRAS CLAVE: Tercer molar, calcifi cación de dientes, odontología forense, determinación de la edad por los dientes.
