Studies on the Bulb Development and Its Physiological Mechanisms in Lilium Oriental Hybrids

Abstract: Based on the growth observation of lily bulbs (Lilium Oriental hybrids, 'Acapulco', 'Marco Polo', 'Siberia', 'Sobonne' and 'Tiber'), we found the mountainous condition was suitable for the bulb development. Total 288,020 bulbs (12-14 cm, 14-16 cm and 16-18 cm in circumference) of Oriental lily were harvested from 401,500 imported bulblets (6/9 cm), which were grown in the mountainous region (Jinyun, Zhejiang Province) having an elevation of 880 m. The average ratio for harvested flowering bulbs (>12 cm) and bi… Show more

“…In short, the starch and soluble sugars accumulation during the middle period, combined with their positive correlations ( Table 2), suggested that the stolon developed in a stage of high levels of carbohydrate. This result was consistent with the previous observations that starch and soluble sugar contents increased together in daughterbulb formation in lily and tuber initiation in potato (Fernie and Willmitzer, 2001;Xia et al, 2005). Protein is a vital nutrient and closely related to carbohydrate, and the two can be interconverted (Ribeiro et al, 2014).…”

“…DETERMINATION OF CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT. Carbohydrate content was determined colorimetrically, essentially as described earlier (Mishra and Dubey, 2013;Xia et al, 2005). Briefly, %0.5 g frozen samples were homogenized with 4 mL 80% ethanol and extracted at 80°C for 30 min, then centrifuged at 8000 g n for 20 min.…”

“…It is well known that the plants at different growth stages are different in their ability of photosynthesis, capacity of nutrient uptake from soil by feeding roots, endogenous hormonal characteristics and changes in the reserved carbohydrates of the bulb scales (Miller, 1992(Miller, , 1993Qian and Yi, 2006;Zheng et al, 2012;Addai et al, 2011a, b;Xia et al, 2005).…”

“…Previous studies suggest that development of storage roots was paralleled with complex physiological activities including carbohydrate, enzyme, and hormone dynamics [2][3][4]. A wealth of studies regarding this have been conducted on bulbous owers such as lilies [5][6][7] and tulips [2,3,8], whereas freesia remains unexplored according to our knowledge.…”

“…Soluble carbohydrates, typically sucrose, were described to be strong triggers of potato tuberization [13]. A concomitant accumulation of starch and sucrose was observed across tube and bulblet development [5,13].…”
