Studies on the Biosorption of Textile Dyes from Aqueous Solutions Using Posidonia Oceanica (L.) Leaf Sheath Fibres

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The adsorption of two textile dyes onto a low-cost and unexploited marine biomass, Posidonia oceanica (L.), was investigated in batch mode. The biosorption process was studied as a function of contact time, initial pH and temperature. The highest dye adsorption capacities attained at 30°C were 3.081 mg/g at pH 2 for the Direct dye and 4.252 mg/g at pH 5 for the Reactive dye. The Freundlich, Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson adsorption models were used to determine the parameters of the equilibrium data an… Show more

“…This is due to an anionic repulsion. Similar results are obtained for other biological matrices such as Posidonia fibers (Ncibi et al, 2009), Luffa cylindrica (Kesraoui et al, 2015) and Date palm leaf base (Alsenani, 2014).…”

“…The positive value of the enthalpy change ∆H° shows that the biosorption process was endothermic. The same result has been observed for the adsorption of Direct and Reactive dyes from Posidonia oceanic (Ncibi et al, 2006). Positive values of the entropy ∆S° indicate the good affinity of the biosorbent towards AB dye (Namasivayam and Kavitha, 2002;Alsenani, 2014).…”

“…The second model used to fit the experimental data of the dye adsorption is the pseudo-second-order, which is applicable to a larger interval of time (Ncibi et al 2006). It is described as follow:…”

“…The n values ranging between 1 and 10 constituted a measure of adsorption intensity or surface heterogeneity, becoming more heterogeneous as its value was around to 10 (Kesraoui et al 2015). Therefore, the Freundlich exponent value was equal to 1 for MB and IC; both were in the 1-10 range indicating favorable adsorption (Ncibi et al 2006). Sips isotherm is a combination between Langmuir and Freundlich forms isotherm models (Foo and Hameed 2010).…”

“…Une modélisation des isothermes d'adsorption et une étude thermodynamique ont été également réalisées afin de comprendre la nature des mécanismes réactionnels mis en jeu lors du présent phénomène de biosorption. Notons que cette biomasse a déjà donné des résultats prometteurs lors d'études d'adsorption du phénol (NCIBI et al, 2006a), de colorants textiles (NCIBI et al, 2006b) et du bleu de méthylène (NCIBI et al, 2007).…”
