Studies on the Behaviour of Water‐endangering Substances in Plants for the Biological Cleaning of Municipal Waste Waters. Part 1: Bromoxynil

Abstract: S'LlUL?>L@r?J:The behaviour of the herbicide bromoxynil (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile), labelled with 82Br, is investigated in a n activated sludge plant on the laboratory scale with municipal wastewater. Only 5 o/o of bromoxynil present in a concentration of 5 mgil are degraded after preadaption of activated sludge for some weeks. The known hydrolysis products 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzamide and 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid were identified as degradation products. I n addition, 1.9$0.9 O/o of the qua… Show more

“…Four of these six metabolites (MB‐1 MB‐2, MB‐5 and MB‐6) were described earlier in other matrices. Luther et al 9 could identify MB‐1 and MB‐2 in waste water and sewage sludge, while MB‐5 and MB‐6 were known to be reaction products of bromoxynil in photochemical reactors under laboratory conditions 10. 11 In Figs 1–5 the EI‐mass spectra (MB‐3, MB‐4) and fragmentation pathways (MB‐5, MB‐6) of the methylated metabolites are shown.…”
