“…Although macrophages are present in high numbers and phagocytosis of spermatozoa by these cells occurs in the uterine cavity of women fitted with an intrauterine device (Sagiroglu & Sagiroglu, 1970;Gupta, Malkani & Bhasin, 1971), passage of spermatozoa to the oviducts also occurs in these patients (Morgenstern, Orgebin-Crist, Clewe, Bonney & Noyes, 1966;Croxatto et al, 1973). Therefore, the passage of spermatozoa through the uterine cavity is probably unaffected by the phagocytic cells which are present in comparably low numbers in normal uterine fluid at midcycle.…”

“…The technique is easy to learn and adds only a few minutes to a routine laparoscopic examination of the pelvic organs. The timing of the procedure is important as sperm migration does not usually occur in the early follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle (Croxatto et al, 1973). Four patients had to be excluded because evidence obtained subsequently showed that they had been in the luteal phase at the time of laparoscopy.…”

“…M orgenstern et al [26] mentioned en passant that 187 oviductal spermatozoa were seen, some being attached to a cumulus-like mucous mass flushed from the tube and others swimming in the immediate vicinity of the mucous mass. C roxatto et al [10], in vestigating women undergoing sterilization preceded by coitus at ovulation time, examined the whole oviduct and in two patients reported 2,184 and 4,980 tubal spermatozoa, respectively. A hlgren [1] reported a low num ber of spermatozoa from open oviducts of 41 infertile women (table I).…”

“…Spermatozoa in the abdominal cavity had been reported by Horne and Audet [20], H orne and Thibault [21], Kelly [22], Sjovall [31], and Croxatto et al [10]. Ahlgren [1] fond spermatozoa in the fluid of Douglas' pouch in 22 of the 155 infertile women from whom such fluid could be aspirated and who had at least one open oviduct.…”
