The ever-increasing demand for transport is sustained by internal combustion (IC) engines. The demand for transport energy is large and continuously increasing across the globe. Though there are few alternative options emerging that may eliminate the IC engine, they are in a developing stage, meaning the burden of transportation has to be borne by IC engines until at least the near future. Hence, IC engines continue to be the prime mechanism to sustain transportation in general. However, the scarcity of fossil fuels and its rising prices have forced nations to look for alternate fuels. Biodiesel has been emerged as the replacement of diesel as fuel for diesel engines. The use of biodiesel in the existing diesel engine is not that efficient when it is compared with diesel run engine. Therefore, the biodiesel engine must be suitably improved in its design and developments pertaining to the intake manifold, fuel injection system, combustion chamber and exhaust manifold to get the maximum power output, improved brake thermal efficiency with reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions that are compatible with international standards. This paper reviews the efforts put by different researchers in modifying the engine components and systems to develop a diesel engine run on biodiesel for better performance, progressive combustion and improved emissions.

The objective of the present investigation is to explore the influence of ternary (diesel-biodiesel-alcohol) fuel blends on the combustion and vibration parameters of a variable compression ratio compression ignition engine. Kusum seed oil biodiesel and isobutyl alcohol were blended with conventional diesel to make a ternary fuel. The blend of biodiesel-diesel (B20) was made in proportion of 20% and 80% by volume, respectively. Furthermore, isobutyl alcohol was added at diverse proportions (ie, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1%). The investigation was carried at different compression ratios (CRs), namely, 16.5, 17.5, and 18.5. The study shows that, upon the addition of isobutyl alcohol, the combustion characteristics (ie, cylinder pressure [CP] and net heat release rate [NHRR]) are significantly enhanced, whereas the mechanical vibration level maintains stable. The CP and NHRR of B20+ 1% isobutyl alcohol are greatly improved for corresponding values of 4.55% and 8.39%, respectively, except for the conventional diesel at CR 18.5. Furthermore, the root mean square velocity (vibration) decreases when increasing the quantity of isobutyl alcohol and attained a minimum with B20+ 1% isobutyl alcohol. The experimental results show that the isobutyl alcohol up to 1% with diesel-biodiesel blends can be used in the CI engine with no further adjustments. Effect of Combustion Parameters on Performance, Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Modified Small Single-Cylinder Diesel Engine

This paper represents the relative performance of a small single-cylinder diesel engine having capacity 3.5 kW. This paper covers experimental investigations of most influencing combustion parameters such as compression ratio, injection pressure and start of injection timing and their values on performance, emission and combustion characteristic of the small single-cylinder CRDI diesel engine for which the mechanical fuel injection system retrofitted with a simple version of the CRDI system. CRDI has yielded good results for large diesel and petrol engines but still not incorporate for cheaper small single-cylinder engines, typically used in the agricultural sector and decentralized power sector for a country like India. It is observed that starts of injection timing and injection pressure are the key parameters for improving the combustion characteristics and therefore engine performance while compression ratio mainly affects the emission characteristics of the engine. Retrofitted CRDI system yielded improved exhaust emission and performance of the engine.
