Studies on PEBAX/organoclay nanocomposites by meltintercalation process: Effect of organoclay surface

Abstract: In this study, the polyetherblock amide (PEBAX) ® nanocomposites with 2.5 % and 5 wt.% organoclay, based on Cloisite 30B (montmorillonite intercalated with dimethyl, 2-ethyl hexyl hydrogenated tallow alkyl ammonium cation), were prepared by the melt-intercalation process. The structural properties, thermal behaviors and the mechanical properties were characterized using the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), melt flow index (MFI), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), … Show more

“…When compared to PP, the differences appear at 1046 cm -1 where Si-O-Si from the Cloisite 30B silicate generates a more intense peak [18] and at 1653 cm -1 value at which the signal intencity increases, fact that is generated by the bending vibration of montmorillonite intermediate layer [19].…”

“…There are studies that discuss the fact that simple Cloisite 30B powder decomposition starts around 174 °C [20], through degradation of organic groups from the modifying agent (quaternary ammonium salts) [18].…”

“…The relative intensity of very intense Si-O-Si stretching band (1,048 cm -1 ) of Cloisite Ò 30B is most sensitive to the degree of intercalation and Si-O bending bands (523 and 465 cm -1 ) of 30B [34] in PLGA/30B show the dispersion of 30B in the polymer matrix. These bands were observed at high fluence, 3 9 10 12 ions/cm 2 , indicating that there is a strong interaction between the clay layers and polymer chain segments due to H-bond formation between Si-O and Si-OH group of 30B with C=O group of PLGA and also confirming some intercalation of polymer chains into the clay galleries of OMMT.…”

“…Polymer blends represent important key engineering materials due to the wide range of technological performance profiles that can be adjusted by proper selection of blending components and functional fillers . Even by suitable combination of commodity polymers and incorporation of organic or inorganic particles the properties of polymer blends can be improved and their performance specifications can be extended at reasonable costs . Fillers such as layered silicates or carbon nanotubes are applied to increase mechanical or barrier properties of polymers.…”
