Studies on Patent Citation Networks

Abstract: Work is described on patent citation networks, a novel technique for displaying the history of technological subjects and their key turning points. The method accurately identifies the key patents in a subject field, and if a subject docs not have a definite starting point, this is reflected in the patent network. The networks are less satisfactory if the key patent took a long time to appear in print. Subjects studied were: semi‐synthetic penicillins, tobacco substitutes, electrophotography, Ziegler‐Natta cat… Show more

“…Such an approach is not new, however, as the authors of an exploratory paper (Ellis, Hepburn & Oppenhein 1978) were aware of the difficulty to compile useful data for patent citation analysis. Nowadays, thanks to the availability of several databases, this issue is no longer relevant and patent citation networks are increasingly used.…”

“…In their pioneer work, ELLIS et al (1978) argued that patent citation networks could identify key developments in the history of a specific technological domain. They also pointed out the potential of using patent citation networks for identifying possible investment 103 venues.…”

“…Patent citation networks model was studied by graph theory based on nodes (patents) and their linkages [24]. This was researched and used in diverse fields of technology analysis for improving the technological competition of a company [21,22,24,25]. To construct a network model for technology analysis, patent citation networks uses the citation results between patents.…”
