Studies on Lymphocytes. II. The Production of Lymphocytosis by Intravenous Heparin in Calves

Abstract: 1. Intravenous commercial heparin produces a lymphocytosis in the calf. The effect is not due to the preservative commonly present in heparin. 2. The lymphocytosis is mediated to a great extent by an increased input of lymphocytes into the blood via the thoracic duct. 3. The necessity of considering, plus controlling the heparin effect on blood lymphocyte levels and on the output of thoracic duct lymphocytes in all studies on lymphocyte production, migration and behavior, is discu… Show more

“…Bradfield & Born (1969), however, observed a lymphocytosis in the rat caused by an inhibition of emigration from the blood. Heparin induced a lymphocytosis and an increase in thoracic duct output of lymphocytes in the calf (Jansen et al, 1962) indicating an increased emigration of lymphocytes from lymph nodes. Gowans & Knight (1964) could not demonstrate an effect of heparin in recirculation studies in the rat.…”

“…This enables them to complex with and change the properties of plasma proteins and more than 50 identified enzymes. 20 Jansen et al 21 have described lymphocytosis in calves after an intravenous injection of heparin. In rodents heparin and other mucopolysaccharides have an inhibitory effect on the shift of lymphocytes from blood to lymph nodes which results in an increase in the level of circulating lymphocytes.…”

“…Figure 2 is a detailed chart of the lym-phocyte concentration in patient 11. The lymphocytosis observed during the first hours of the ECI sessions was due to the heparinization (Jansen et al 1962) and appeared also when heparin alone was given.…”
