Studies on irritable bowel syndrome associated with anxiety or depression in the last 20 years: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) associated with anxiety or depression is ubiquitous in clinical practice, and multiple related articles have been published. However, studies that utilize bibliometric analyses to address this topic are rare. In our study, we aimed to reveal research trends in IBS with anxiety or depression. Publications on IBS in relation to anxiety or depression in the last 20 years were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). “…As regards betweenness centrality, Nicholas J. Talley, Jan Tack, Gerald Holtmann, Michael Camilleri, Ken Haruma, and Paul Moayyedi were ranked at the top of the list, reiterating the excellence of North America, Europe, and Australia in FD research. The results of our study lend empirical support to recent papers ( Zyoud et al, 2019 , 2021 ; Chen et al, 2022a ; Zhang T. et al, 2022b ) that argues greater diversity of collaboration is necessary to advance FGIDs field in Asia. Research on FD will therefore have much to offer since Asian research into FD is still a fledgling.…”

“…Although IBS is not a life-threatening syndrome, people with IBS have a reduced quality of life (QoL) [9,10]. The IBS is also closely linked to several psychological comorbidities, such as anxiety and depression, which are the most prominent causes of global disability [11]. In essence, the disorder presents a variety of irritating symptoms, particularly abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea which interfere with patients' lifestyles and result in higher absenteeism and costs, poor productivity, and reduced educational, social, and occupational achievements [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
