“…The most important finding in this study of prolonged immunological stimulation of a lymph-node is that the proliferation of histiocytes that occurs is not related to the lymphatic sinuses, which they appear to obliterate by external pressure, until the final stages. In this way the reaction differs markedly from true sinus histiocytosis (Black, Kerpe and Speer, 1953;Black et al, 1954Black et al, , 1955Black, Speer and Opler, 1956;Speer, 1958, 1960;Carter and Gershon, 1966;Black and Asire, 1969), which is considered by many to be an immunological antimetastatic reaction to distal neoplasia. From these studies, unfortunately, it seems likely that sinus histiocytosis alone, without other evidence of immuno-pathological changes such as the large pyroninophilic cell response demonstrated by Anastassiades and Pryce (1966) may not be due to host resistance (Berg, 1956(Berg, ,1959, but may be instead a nonspecific reaction to the continued presence of foreign material in the lymph (Kruger, 1967;Gaafar and Turk, 1970).…”

“…Additional information stems from experimental animals in which nodes draining tumours show many of the changes found in man (Carter & Gershon 1966, 1967, Carter et al 1968. A few recent observations are briefly summarized:…”
