Background: Onchocerciasis is a chronic parasitic infection caused by the filarial nematode, Onchocerca volvulus. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, endemicity, and symptomatic effects of the disease in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area.Methods: The prevalence of onchocerciasis was investigated in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria, between March 2008 and June 2009 using the standard skin-snip method. A total of 2020 subjects, who had visited various primary health centres located in each community, were enlisted using randomised sampling, and the data were analysed using the Chi-squared (χ 2 ) test and logistic regression. Results: A Of the 2020 individuals examined, 1674 (83%) harboured microfilaria in their skin tissues. On the basis of the standardised scale for microfilaria prevalence-less than 10% is considered sporadic, 10%-29% is considered hypoendemic, 30%-59% is considered mesoendemic, and 60% and above is considered hyperendemic-the prevalence (83%) reported in this study led to the disease being classified as hyperendemic. Females were more frequently infected than were males, and this was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Prevalence was also found to increase with age, and this correlation was significant (P < 0.001). The prevalence of the clinical features of the disease in the local government area was 87.5% for leopard skin, 84.16% for itching, and 75.42% for nodules.Conclusion: A prevalence of 83% was observed and considered hyperendemic. Female gender and age (50 years or more) were significant risk factors that affected the prevalence of onchocerciasis. The findings demonstrated the hyperendemicity of infection and the need for urgent attention with ivermectin treatment and other control measures.

“…Visual impairment due to onchocercal eye disease is demonstrable in about 3% of children aged 5 years who live in hyperendemic communities and 35% of males and 26% of females in such communities are visually disabled by the age of 30 years (Nwoke and Dozie 1997). Although, several studies have been carried out on the incidence of the disease in different parts of the country, particularly the northern bioecological savanna zone (Anosike and Onwuliri 1995;Akogun et al 2000;Anosike et al 2001;Dozie and Nwoke 2002), its distribution and complications remain inadequately understood in many endemic communities in the rainforest. This is especially true in the Imo river basin in southeastern Nigeria, where previous entomological studies (Nwoke and Uwazie 1991) as well as a rapid assessment survey to identify communities eligible for mass treatment with ivermectin showed that the disease is endemic in this area (Nwoke et al 1994).…”

Human infection with Onchocerca volvulus was investigated in 13 rural communities in the Upper Imo River basin, Imo State, Nigeria between March 1997 and December 2000 using the skin snip method. Of the 3,311 persons examined, 889 (26.8%) had microfilariae. There were significant differences between communities in microfilariae prevalence and intensity of infection (P<0.05). Sex infection was similar in males (26.8%) and females (26.9%); whereas farmers (46.6%) and fishermen (28.4%) were more affected than people in other occupations. The proportion of infected persons increased with age coinciding with the period when most clinical signs manifest. A significant proportion of the 889 persons with positive microfilariae skin biopsy had musculoskeletal pain (57.1%). Thirty-four (47.2%) of the 72 epileptics identified had positive skin biopsy in addition to other manifestations. The present findings show that onchocerciasis is a public health problem in the area. The use of ivermectin has reduced the incidence of the disease when compared with data from the pre-ivermectin era. This shows that Community Directed Treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI) campaign is successful and should be sustained until onchocerciasis is eliminated as a public health problem in the area.

Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness and Robles disease, is a parasitic disease caused by Onchocerca volvulus, a nematode (roundworm), and it is endemic in tropical countries like Nigeria. The objective of this paper is to discuss the mathematical formulation underpinning the spread and control of this disease on one hand. On the other hand, we make use of some new analytical methods to derive the solution of the resulting set of equations. The numerical results are presented to test the efficiency and the accuracy of both methods. The techniques used for solving these problems are friendly, very easy, and less time consuming. The numerical solutions in both cases display the biological behaviour of the real life situation.
