“…The ferrocene group ensured excellent reversibility of the redox system (differences between anodic and cathodic peak potential were lower than 30 mV). The contact angle measurements, V a (H 2 O), revealed that the hydrophobicity of gold surface covered with designed monolayers (V a ¼ 70 AE 48 and 79 AE 68 for SAM I and II, respectively) is much higher comparing to bare gold (V a ¼ 60 AE 88) [24,25]. Additional incorporation of highly lipophilic n-hexanethiol (V a ¼ 103 AE 48) within monolayers structures in 3/7 molar ratio significantly improved they lipophilicity (V a ¼ 83 AE 48 for SAM I þ III and V a ¼ 94 AE 58 for SAM II þ III).Potentiometric studies revealed significant improvement of performance of ISE applying monolayers comparing to these without any intermediate layer [24].…”

“…The presence of molecules adsorbed on the gold surface was confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy [24,25]. Redox properties of obtained monolayers were studied by cyclic voltammetry [24,25].…”

“…However, the original solid-contact electrodes suffer from potential instability and irreproducibility which have mainly been attributed to the lack of a welldefined redox couple and also the formation of a thin aqueous layer at the membrane/substrate interface [11]. Numerous works have been done to solve these problems by the utilization of ion-to-electron transducers [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…In addition, the same electron transfer theory concerning blocking SAMs might be applied to this system [9,10]. The most popular electroactive SAMs contain ferrocenes [11,12], ruthenium complexes [13,14], phthalocyanines [15 -17], metalloporphyrins [18,19], cytochromes [20] and atrazine [21], just to name a few.…”
