Studies on feline CD8+ T cell non-cytolytic anti-feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) activity

Abstract: CD8+ T cells in FIV-infected cats inhibit feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) replication by producing a soluble factor(s). In the present study, four SPF cats were experimentally infected with FIV. The period during which the anti-FIV activity of CD8+ T cells became detectable was investigated, and the presence or absence of this activity in the lymph nodes and spleen was examined. Furthermore, we investigated which step(s) of the FIV replication cycle are affected by this antiviral activity. This antiviral a… Show more

“…ϩ T cells release soluble factors and suppress the synthesis of FIV mRNA from FIV proviral DNA, thereby inhibiting the expression of FIV proteins on the surface of infected cells (10,12). Thus, CD4 ϩ cells evade damage and can live while suppressing FIV replication.…”

“…Detection of non-cytolytic antiviral activity can be assayed in vitro by depletion of the CD8+ population from the sample and correlates temporally with the reduction in virus burden during the acute phase of infection [26,81,96,98]. Noncytolytic activity can be detected as early as 1 week following infection, is seen prior to detection of cytolytic activity, and can be detected in multiple lymphoid tissues [81].…”

“…These CD8+T cells are thought to play an important role in the control of systemic and brain infection Gebhard et al 1999;Hohdatsu et al 2000;Hohdatsu et al 2002). Eventually, a severe immunodeficiency develops with accompanying opportunistic infections (English et al 1994).…”
