Studies on Coprozoic Ciliates

Abstract: This paper contains a revision of the morphology and classification of three species of holotrichous ciliates, Lembus pusillus, Cyclidium glaucoma and Uronema nigricans (=Uronema marina Dujardin, 1841=Cryptochilum nigricans Maupas, 1883=U. marina et U. marinum auctorum, pro parte), together with various observations on their biology. The revised data on these species are summarised in the diagnoses preceding their description. The close resemblance between U. nigricans and the other species described has led to… Show more

“…Several authors have previously suggested that U. nigricans and U. marinum be synonymized due to their superficial similarities (e.g. Hoare 1927, Kahl 1931 whereas others have suggested that they be retained as separate species on the basis of their occurrence in freshwater and marine habitats respectively (Thompson & Evans 1968). However, U. nigricans has been recorded from both freshwater and marine habitats and various isolates have exhibited good growth in brackish and seawater (Perez-Uz 1995).…”

“…The genus Cyclidium consists of a large number of species most of which are incompletely described. Hoare (14) considers only 5 species to be valid. C. glaucoma and C. citrullus, each having a caudal cilium, differ only in size, C. citrullus being > 28 km, and C .…”
