Studies on canine pregnancy using B‐mode ultrasound: Development of the conceptus and determination of gestational age

Abstract: Development of the conceptus was characterised using B‐mode ultrasound in a standard size of dog (labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and their crosses; weight range 22 to 30 kg). Growth curves were established for various measurements of the conceptuses. Regression equations allowed the prediction of the expected time of parturition. Multiple regression analysis of two measurements (biparietal diameter and trunk diameter) resulted in an increase in the confidence of prediction.

“…Of fetal structures, fetal head diameter and fetal body diameter increased at an almost fixed rate and the regression was significantly and linearly related to gestational age on day 38 to parturition, as in the previous studies [4,10,15]. Fetal crown-rump length increased at linear rate on days 35 to 49, but the regression of fetal crown-rump length was not significantly relative to gestational age compared with those of other fetal structures.…”

“…In veterinary medicine, the estimation of gestational age based on anatomic appearance and the prediction of parturition day by ultrasonographic examination are partially characterized. England et al [4] made assessments of the diameter of pregnancy structures in pregnant bitches. And Yeager et al [15] made similar estimates of fetal size during pregnancy and found that the best correlation was between fetal head diameter and gestational age.…”

“…La media del DBP del Golden Retriever fue de 29.4 mm, muy parecida a la media encontrada por England et al (1990). También se puede observar que el DBP del Bulldog Inglés, raza mediana pero de cabeza braquiocefálica, presenta un DBP mayor que el de las razas grandes, lo cual le predispone a la ocurrencia de distocias.…”
