With fossil fuel being the major source of energy, CO2 emission levels need to be reduced to a minimal amount namely from anthropogenic sources. Energy consumption is expected to rise by 48% in the next 30 years, and global warming is becoming an alarming issue which needs to be addressed on a thorough technical basis. Nonetheless, exploring CO2 capture using membrane contactor technology has shown great potential to be applied and utilised by industry to deal with post- and pre-combustion of CO2. A systematic review of the literature has been conducted to analyse and assess CO2 removal using membrane contactors for capturing techniques in industrial processes. The review began with a total of 2650 papers, which were obtained from three major databases, and then were excluded down to a final number of 525 papers following a defined set of criteria. The results showed that the use of hollow fibre membranes have demonstrated popularity, as well as the use of amine solvents for CO2 removal. This current systematic review in CO2 removal and capture is an important milestone in the synthesis of up to date research with the potential to serve as a benchmark databank for further research in similar areas of work. This study provides the first systematic enquiry in the evidence to research further sustainable methods to capture and separate CO2.

Crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is an ideal membrane material for separation of CO2 from light gases (e.g., H2, N2, O2, CH4 etc). In these membranes, crosslinking is used as a tool to suppress crystallinity of the PEG segments. In spite of the extensive effort to develop crosslinked PEG membranes in the last two decades, it remains a challenge to establish the structure–property relationships. This paper points out the fundamental limitations to correlate the chain topology of a network with the gas permeation mechanism. While a quantitative comparison of the molecular weight between crosslinks of networks and gas permeation mechanism reported by different research groups is challenging, effort is made to draw a qualitative picture. In this review, a focus is also put on the progress of utilization of dangling chain fractions to tailor the gas permeation behavior of PEG networks.

Removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption onto wheat straw cellulose‐based polymeric composites

The wheat straw cellulose‐based hydrogels were synthesized by graft copolymerization followed by semi‐interpenetrating network technology. The prepared hydrogels were characterized through various methods including Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption performances of hydrogels toward Cu(II) ions. The results suggested that the introduction of semi‐interpenetrating network polymers, sodium alginate and poly(vinyl alcohol), could greatly enhance the adsorption property of hydrogels. And the wheat straw cellulose‐g‐poly(potassium acrylate)/sodium alginate hydrogel showed a highest Cu(II) ions adsorption capacity of 130 mg/g. The equilibrium isotherm and adsorption kinetics were also studied. Besides, the mass transfer coefficients and the thermodynamics of Cu(II) ions adsorption were also probed. Finally, the X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further demonstrated that the Cu(II) ions adsorption was mainly via complexation reaction of NH2 and O‐containing groups in hydrogels. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
