Conjugated oligomers represent a prominent class of compounds from a viewpoint of their theory, synthesis, and applications in materials science. Push-pull substitution with an electron donor D at one end of the conjugation and an electron acceptor A at the other end results in them having outstanding optical and electronical properties. This Review highlights fundamental synthetic strategies for the preparation of such oligomers with n repeat units (n=1, 2, 3, 4, ..) and the rules that govern their linear and nonlinear optical properties (absorption, frequency doubling and tripling). The unification of chemical, physical, and theoretical aspects with an interdisciplinary image of this class of compounds is attempted herein.

The use of several zirconium reagents as the Schwartz reagent [Cp 2 ZrHCl] n , the dimethylzirconocene Cp 2 ZrMe 2, the zirconocene [Cp 2 Zr], and the diphenylzirconocene Cp 2 ZrPh 2 allows the synthesis of a variety of new linear and cyclic P-C and P-N ligands. 1,1 diphosphines can be prepared from unsaturated monophosphines. A useful methodology involving ring opening reactions permits the preparation of phosphinite-phosphine and bis-phosphinite ligands. N-functionalized imines and -diimines substituted with phosphino groups are obtained from cyanophosphines or dinitriles. Carbozirconation of chlorophospha-imine leads to the unprecedented P-metalated iminophosphorane which presents a versatile reactivity towards electrophiles and small unsaturated molecules. Constraint three and four phosphorus cycles can be easily isolated using [Cp 2 M] (M = Zr or Ti). Interactions between benzynezirconocene and unsaturated phosphines afford numerous methods to prepare linear and cyclic phosphorus reagents. Enantiomerically pure iminophosphines can be synthetized from phosphinozirconocene complexes.

Konjugierte Oligomere sind in theoretischer, präparativer und materialwissenschaftlicher Hinsicht eine prominente Substanzklasse. Die Push‐pull‐Substitution durch einen Elektronendonor an einem Ende und einen Elektronenacceptor am anderen Ende verleiht den Verbindungen D‐π‐A besondere optische und elektronische Eigenschaften. Der vorliegende Aufsatz schildert die grundsätzlichen Strategien zur Synthese solcher Oligomerenreihen mit n Wiederholungseinheiten (n=1, 2, 3, 4, …︁) und die für ihre linearen und nichtlinearen optischen Eigenschaften (Absorption, Frequenzverdoppelung und ‐verdreifachung) geltenden Gesetzmäßigkeiten. Aus den chemischen, physikalischen und theoretischen Aspekten der push‐pull‐substituierten konjugierten Oligomere soll sich ein interdisziplinäres Bild dieser Verbindungsklasse zusammenfügen.
