Abstract:Although monoamine transporters translocate substrates (neurotransmitters) across the plasma membrane, a second less studied function is their ion channel-like activity which is responsible for the passive permeation of ions through the membrane. These currents are inward at resting membrane potential and would result in cell depolarization, which may enhance presynaptic excitability, and which would help explain the elevated release of neurotransmitter associated by psychostimulants. Here we compare the ionic… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
