Studies of the allergens of Olea europea pollen

Abstract: Summary Allergens of Olea eurupea have been prepared by isoelectrofocusing and tested by RAST, RAST inhibition and skin tests. The major allergen was found to be an acidic protein of pI 6, consisting of two polypeptide chains of molecular weight 15000 and 17000 daltons, possibly non‐covalently associated into a dimer. Most other allergens were acidic proteins, but basic proteins were also observed with allergenic activity. The RAST inhibition studies show a considerable degree of allergic cross‐reactivity betw… Show more

“…Several allergens have been identified in olive pollen (Blanca et al 1983;Vela et al 1982), and two proteins considered major allergens have been purified and characterized (Lauzurica et al 1988b). The major allergen of olive pollen, designated Olea Antigen I (Ole e I), has been separated into two bands of molecular masses 17 and 19 kDa by two-dimensional SDS-PAGE.…”

“…An ELISA titration with fixed Ole e 3 of this antiserum is shown in ELISA inhibition of the binding to wells coated with Ole e 3 was measured by means of a rabbit antiserum specific for Ole e 3 previously incubated with pollen extracts (500 pg or 50 pg total protein, calculated by the method of Lowry et al [20]) from (1) olive tree, (2) mugwort, (3) birch, (4) ryegrass, ( 5 ) rose, (6) pine, (7) cypress. Mustardseed saline extract (8) was used as control.…”

“…To date, at least 20 proteins with allergenic activity have been described in olive pollen [4]. Among them, Ole e 1 is the most frequent sensitizing allergen [5, 6].…”
