“…First, acetosyringone is a potent inducer of the virulence genes of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and is believed to be the wound signal that attracts Agrobacterium to its host and then facilitates T-DNA transfer (Stachel et al 1985;Sheikholeslam and Weeks 1987). In higher plants, wound-induced acetophenones such as acetosyringone may be limited to members of the Solanaceae (Spencer and Towers 1991), although the compound has been detected as a constitutive phenolic component at relatively high levels in other species, including the herb Polyporus umbellatus (Ishida et al 1999) and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica (Agostini et al 1998). C4H is a wound-induced enzyme (Benveniste et al 1977), and it is therefore tempting to speculate that transgenic over-expression of C4H mimics the metabolic phenotype of wound-induced cells, resulting in acetosyringone production.…”

P. umbellatus is the only one that was commercially cultivated, but this species is tough and is consumed mainly for medicinal purposes as dry powder in tablets [5,26,29].
