Studies of Poly-2-vinylpyridine. III. Intrinsic Viscosity and Molecular Weight

Abstract: The viscosity, osmotic pressure and light-scattering of a series of 14 fractions of poly-2-vinylpyridine in various solvents have been measured. The following results have been obtained: The constants, Kw′ and v, in the Mark-Houwink equation have been determined for the solutions of: (a) 92.01 weight per cent ethanol, (b) methanol, (c) dimethylformamide, (d) benzene and (e) dioxane as follows: (a) [η]=1.22×10−4Mw0.73 (d) [η]=1.70×104Mw0.64 (b) [η]=1.13×104Mw0.73 (e) [η]=3.09×104Mw… Show more

“…This 8-temperature considerably differs from those obtained by Dondos 13 (15°C) and Arichi 14 (16.2°C). The difference may arise from differences either in purity of the solvents used or in tacticity of the samples obtained.…”

“…The molar mass of PSVP was determined by viscosimetry in methanol using [VI = 1.13 x 10-3Mv0.73. 13 The molar mass of P4VP was determined by viscosimetry in ethanol using [VI = 2.50 x 10-4M,0.6.14 The xylene solutions were prepared from PSVP and P4VP provided by Polyscience Europe GmbH. The molar masses of P2VP (M, = 330 000) and P4VP (M, = 49 000) were determined in DMF13 and in absolute ethanol,l4 respectively.…”

“…The substances used in this study were as follows: potyvinylpiridine (PVP) supplied by Aldrich Chemical Co., with an average molecular weight of 250,000, determined viscosimetrically using Shizuo Arichi's constants [6]; extremely pure stearic acid supplied by Messrs. Carlo Erba, Milan, Italy ; extremely pure methyl stearate supplied by Merck, Darmstadt; extremely pure stearyIamine supplied by Sigma Chemical Co., Munich.…”
