“…Sera obtained from each patient before and during the period of prednisolone therapy were stored at -20°C without added preservative. Parietal cell antibody titers were measured by an immunofluorescent technique with freshfrozen sections of rat gastric mucosa and fluoresceinlabeled antihuman yG-globulin antiserum (11). Intrinsic factor antibody was assayed by the method of Jeffries, Hoskins, and Sleisenger (12).…”

“…It is of interest, however, that patients who responded to prednisolone therapy were those with higher titers of circulating parietal cell antibody. High titers of parietal cell antibody, persisting for many years after the diagnosis of pernicious anemia has been established (11,18), may reflect a continuing stimulation of antibody production by parietal cell antigen released from degenerating mucosal cells. The three patients who did not respond to prednisolone therapy had low titers of parietal cell antibody and exhibited extensive intestinal metaplasia in their gastric mucosal biopsies.…”

“…Since the early observations of Schwartz [25] and Taylor [26], which were confirmed by several authors [1][2][3][4][5], the possibility that PA and atrophic gastritis are autoimmune diseases has been discussed. All papers referring to this problem were concerned to humoral antibodies directed against parietal cells or intrinsic factor, respectively, with the exception of the report of McGuigan 113 1.…”

“…The high incidence of autoanti bodies against the extract of gastric mucosa and against parietal cells in patients with PA and simple atrophic gastritis, as well as the finding of intrinsic factor antibodies in patients with PA and latent PA lead to a consideration of the possible role of auto immunity in the pathogenesis of gastric mucosa lesions [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Parietal cell antibodies were demonstrated in 75-86 % of sera (34, 60, 119). Gastric autoantibodies of both IgG and IgA subclasses have also been found in the gastric juice (38, 66,110,137). Strickland reported that 15 out of 20 patients with serum parietal cell antibodies also had the antibody in the gastric juice.…”
