0.5AFeO 3 -0.5NaNbO 3 (A ¼ Bi, La) solid solution compositions were prepared using a solid phase reaction route from high-purity starting oxides. M€ ossbauer studies have shown that while for 0.5BiFeO 3 -0.5NaNbO 3 the magnetic phase transition temperature T M value is about 150 K, for 0.5LaFeO 3 -0.5NaNbO 3 , it is only …25 K. This dramatic difference in T M values seems to be due to additional contribution of the magnetic superexchange between Fe 3þ ions via the empty 6p-states of Bi 3þ ions to the overall superexchange.

Perovskite (1-x)BiFeO 3 -xNaNbO 3 nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by Pechini method and crystallographic information was obtained from XRD and TEM analysis. Structural analysis using XRD and TEM shows that phase pure samples were obtained with reduced particle size. The observations encountered reveal that particle size plays a crucial role in deciding the electric and magnetic properties. The multiferroic character of nanoparticles is confirmed through magneto electric (ME) coupling studies. The good coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic behaviors in the composite provides the possibility to achieve a measurable ME effect. The highest value of the magneto electric coefficient (α) is observed for x=0.1 (α=0.13 Vcm -1 Oe -1 ) and it reduces for higher x values. Magnetization measurements for x=0.1 show small hysteresis at 6 K which also confirms the presence of magnetic phase at low temperature while the usual antiferromagnetic behavior of BFO is found at 300 K. The reduced size and absence of impurity could be the reason for the enhancement in electrical property.Low loss tangent values observed in the samples is a remarkable improvement. Open aperture Z-scan measurements reveal a nonlinear absorption behavior, which results in good optical limiting when excited with short pulse (nanosecond) as well as ultrafast (femtosecond) laser pulses.

In this work the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman and dielectric studies of lead free perovskite (1 -x)Ba 0.06 (Na 1/2 Bi 1/2 ) 0.94 TiO 3 -xNaNbO 3 (0 x 1.0) ceramics, prepared using a standard solid state reaction method, were investigated. X-ray diffraction studies of all the ceramics suggested the formation of single phase with crystal structure transforming from rhombohedral-tetragonal to orthorhombic symmetry with the increase in NaNbO 3 content. Raman spectra also confirmed the formation of solid solution without any new phase. Dielectric studies showed that the phase transition is of diffusive character and diffusivity parameter decreases with increasing NaNbO 3 content. The compositional fluctuation was considered to be the main cause of diffusivity.
