Studies of in vivo distribution of bovine herpesvirus type 4 in the natural host

Abstract: The in vivo distribution of bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4) was examined by testing nasal and conjunctival exudates, peripheral blood leukocytes, and various organs of experimentally infected calves. For virus detection, a nested PCR assay, virus isolation, and immunohistochemistry were applied. The nervous system and the muscles were free of viral DNA. Liver and intestinal lymph nodes contained low amounts of virus (less than two copies per 1 g of cellular DNA). Intestinal, tonsil, thymus, and kidney tissue… Show more

“…The role of BHV-4 in abortion and various reproductive disorders closely following an infection has been reported by many researchers (Goyal & Naeem 1992;Egyed et al 1996;Czaplicki & Thiry 1998;Frazier et al 2001;Kalman et al 2004). In this study, correlation between BHV-4 and infertility was investigated.…”

“…There are many investigations on pathogenesis of BHV-1 on the reproductive system (Miller & Van der Maaten 1985, but studies are limited on BHV-4. Organ distribution (Egyed et al 1996) and virus-isolated cases (Naeem et al 1989;Czaplicki & Thiry 1998;Frazier et al 2001;Kalman et al 2004) show that BHV-4 is an effective virus on various reproductive parameters. Considering the latent character of the infection, it is possible to say that chronic problems may always be seen.…”

“…[19][20][21] Like other gammaherpesviruses, BHV-4 produces persistent low-level infections of lymphoid tissues and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. 7,22,23 Enzymatic amplification of BHV-4 nucleic acid by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) provides a specific, sensitive, and rapid means of detecting low-level BHV-4 infections. 22 To further investigate BHV-4 infections in cats, we developed a 2-stage heminested PCR that uses primer sets designed to amplify a conserved region of the BHV-4 homologue of the herpes simplex virus-1 glycoprotein B (gB) gene.…”
