“…Nanofiltration (NF) was used in commercial level in Finland with a capacity of 380-600 m 3 /day which was intended for the removal of fluoride and aluminum from groundwater (Kettunen and Keskitalo 2000). Selective defluoridation was observed for the first time using an NF membrane that has mass transfer properties very similar to RO membranes (Pontie et al 2003). Electrodialysis (ED) is also used as an excellent technique for simultaneous defluoridation and desalination of brackish water (Adhikary et al 1989).…”

“…Tahaikt et al (2008) compared fluoride rejections of three NF membranes with different configurations and found that the double pass with TR60 or NF270 membranes is comparable to the simple pass with NF90 which is similar to RO membranes. On the other hand, Lhassani et al (2001) and Pontie et al (2003) reported the advantage of NF over RO to be that NF rejects fluoride selectively from other halide ions. Pontie et al (2012) further compared the performances of NF and RO membranes and indicated that NF permits to reduce partially the total salinity and remove fluoride to meet WHO guideline for feed concentrations up to 15 mg L À1 with lower energy consumption than RO.…”
