Studies of dual-harmonic acceleration at CSNS- II

Abstract: The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron RCS) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) complex is designed to provide 1.56×1013 protons per pulse (ppp) during the initial stage, and it is upgradeable to 3.12×1013 ppp during the second stage and 6.24×1013 ppp during the ultimate stage. The high beam intensity in the RCS requires alleviation of space charge effects to reduce beam losses, which is key in such high beam power accelerators. With higher intensities in the upgrading phases, a dual-harmonic RF system is pla… Show more

“…In the normal operation mode, the chopping factor is 50%; in the dedicated mode for a short-bunch beam for white neutron applications, a 30% chopping factor can be used. At the same time, the injection with an on-momentum beam instead of an offmomentum beam [18] is used. However, with the reduced longitudinal emittance, the transverse space charge effects become more important.…”

“…The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is advancing into its upgrade phase (CSNS-II), targeting a higher beam power up to 500 kW. The key parameters of CSNS-II can be found in table 1. The most important thing for the transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics is to address the strong space charge effect arising from the higher beam intensity.…”

“…The most important thing for the transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics is to address the strong space charge effect arising from the higher beam intensity. To counteract this, the dual-harmonic acceleration mechanism [1,2], which has already demonstrated its efficacy in mitigating the space charge effect, is slated for introduction. Given the limited tunnel space in the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS), only a high-gradient cavity can fulfil the needs for the second harmonic voltage.…”
