Este contributo português para a discussão da ideia de «Império» consiste num conjunto de 17 estudos que abrangem também as várias áreas de investigação da Antiguidade. A partir das fontes bíblicas, propõe-se uma estruturação de categorias e uma organização de semânticas como possíveis caminhos para o entendimento da ideia de «império». Aborda-se o caso egípcio, focando-se a problemática da periodização da História egípcia e a terminologia utilizada para a definir, bem como a desintegração política que ocorreu no Egito no final do Império Novo. Para o universo dos impérios antigos da Mesopotâmia, foca-se a emergência da hegemonia paleobabilónica através da análise da ideologia subjacente às políticas sociais e militares levadas a cabo por Hammurabi em dois momentos cruciais da história da Babilónia: a guerra contra o Elam e o ataque ao reino de Larsa, e reflete-se sobre o facto de, habitualmente, ser atribuído à dinastia de Akkad o estatuto de "Primeiro Império". Para o espaço da Anatólia e do território fenício/siro palestinense, recorre-se a um método que colhe nas narrativas mítico-religiosas elementos para o estudo das realidades políticas e apresenta-se uma reflexão sobre Imperialismo no mundo colonial fenício. As civilizações e sociedades neomesopotâmicas estão representadas neste livro por estudos sobre contextos de violência, militar ou venatória; sobre Jeremias e a defesa de uma submissão divinamente fundamentada de Judá ao chamado Império Neobabilónico; sobre a figura de Nabónido, o último rei deste período; e ainda sobre os diferentes comportamentos de Nabónido e de Ciro relativamente ao culto de Marduk. Sobre a Pérsia, lemos textos sobre a teorização política que Heródoto apresenta em 3.80-82 e acerca das rainhas na Pérsia Antiga. De igual modo, sobre o período helenístico, reflecte-se sobre o papel e a importância da mulher na sociedade helenística, especialmente no que diz respeito à esfera do poder. Nos últimos quatro estudos deste conjunto de ensaios, propõe-se uma genealogia conceptual para a ideia de imperium no mundo romano; trata-se a representação que na historiografia antiga se faz do processo de construção do imperialismo romano e dos seus intervenientes; analisa-se as Vidas dos Césares, obra em que Suetónio revela a sua interpretação do poder imperial e a forma como ele deve ser exercido; e sugere-se uma ideia de globalização para o mundo romano tardio.

This article will analyse a number of Dead Sea manuscripts and/or fragments in order to determine their linguistic and exegetical value. The article will, firstly, address textual material that is largely in agreement with the Massoretic Text – 1QIsaa is a case in point. Secondly, fragmentsthat are seemingly less relevant will be discussed. The less helpful fragments from the Biblical books Proverbs and Job are taken as examples. Finally, highly significant textual differences, such as a fragment from Genesis 1 and one from the complicated books of Jeremiah, will be evaluated.

The version of the ‘building and planting’ conceptual pair found in Jeremiah 29:5 differs from the standard trope used elsewhere within the Hebrew Bible; it is the only example in which the object to be planted is a garden (גנה‎). Awareness of the exilic community’s Mesopotamian context potentially illuminates this alteration, as two mutually inclusive historical factors could have influenced the change. Jeremiah’s exhortation could account for the community’s agricultural context. By planting gardens, the exiles participated in the shift toward horticulture during the long 6th century and contributed to the שלום‎ of the region. Alternatively, Jeremiah 29:5 shares language with royal inscriptions of Esarhaddon. This proposed connection builds upon previous explorations of references to a 70-year exile elsewhere in both texts. The plausibility of the latter option would lend support to the literary coherence of Jeremiah 29:5–14, while the former suggests a 6th century provenance for the passage.
